Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the mission of the Universal Open Textbook Initiative (UOTI)?

Our mission is to improve the quality of educational resources across the world and provide a foundation of educational content that everyone can use and build on.

2. How do you achieve this mission?

We achieve our mission by first providing openly licensed textbooks inspired by the standards used in advanced countries, such as the United States and Singapore, and then by ensuring the same material is available in multiple languages, including those spoken in the least developed countries.

3. How do I find the content I need?

On the home page, select your preferred language from the dropdown menu. This will display available options for that language organized by the typical starting age of students. For reference, the corresponding U.S. educational level is shown next to each age. You can then select your subject and obtain the download link.

We recommend using our Master Curriculum Document, which provides information on the scope and content of each textbook that can be obtained through specific selections.

4. In what file format are the textbooks available?

Currently, all textbooks are available for download in PDF format. We plan to introduce additional, editable formats in the future.

5. How do I learn about the specific terms of use for a particular textbook? Can I use these textbooks for commercial purposes?

Please refer to the copyright page of each textbook for detailed information about allowed uses and any restrictions.

6. Who wrote these textbooks?

All textbooks are authored and reviewed by educators and subject matter experts. Contributors are listed on each textbook’s copyright page.

7. How can I help?

We welcome contributions from philanthropists, translators, subject matter experts, educators, and others. If you’d like to contribute, please contact us via email at contact@uotinitiative.org.
